Needle Punch Heart Coasters

Needle Punch Heart Coasters

This needle punch coaster is quick, cute, and a perfect beginner project. You’ll punch a simple heart into a round hoop, then trim and finish it into a sturdy drink coaster.

What You’ll Need

  • cotton fabric
  • Needle punch tool
  • Embroidery hoop or gripper frame
  • Cotton yarn: red, hot pink, pink, and white
  • Scissors
  • Fabric marker or pencil
  • Felt circle (for backing) + fabric glue or hand sewing needle and thread

Step 1: Prep Your Fabric in the Hoop

Cut a square of cotton fabric at least 2 inches bigger than your hoop. Stretch it tight in the hoop like a drum. If it loosens while you punch, re-tighten before continuing.

Step 2: Draw the Coaster and Heart

On the fabric, draw a circle for your coaster (about 4 inches across) and a simple heart centered inside. Keep the heart big and clean so it reads well at coaster size.

Step 3: Punch the Heart

Thread your punch needle with red yarn and punch the heart outline first. Then fill the heart using hot pink or pink. Keep your loop height consistent as you go.

Step 4: Fill the Background and Finish the Edge

Switch to white yarn and punch the background inside the circle, right up to the heart edge. For a clean round coaster, keep your punches dense and even near the circle line.

Step 5: Trim, Back, and Finish

Remove the fabric from the hoop. Trim the piece into a circle leaving about 1 inch margin beyond the punched area. Apply glue around the margin, fold it to the back, then attach a felt circle to cover the raw fabric. Let it dry fully before using.

Final Thoughts

These make great gifts and they are easy to batch make in different colorways. If your loops look uneven, you can lightly trim the surface for a tidy, velvety finish. Keep drinks from soaking in by using dense punching and a full felt backing.
