Good to know

Cotton yarn questions, answered

Is it machine washable?

Yes — machine wash cool on gentle, then lay flat to dry. Cotton softens with washing, so dishcloths and washcloths actually improve with use.

Will the colors bleed or fade?

Our cotton is dyed colorfast. As with any deeply saturated yarn, we recommend washing reds and dark shades separately the first time, then you're set.

How much yarn does a project take?

A standard dishcloth uses about one 85-yard skein. A baby blanket runs 8–10 skeins, and a medium amigurumi uses 1–2 skeins plus small amounts of accent colors.

How is cotton different from acrylic?

Cotton yarn has less stretch than acrylic yarn so tote bags and such hold their shape. Also cotton is less fuzzy for cleaner, crisper stitches.

What makes combed cotton different?

Combing removes short fibers before spinning, leaving a smoother, stronger, lower-lint yarn. That's where the clean stitch definition comes from.
