Quilt a Desk Mat

Using cotton fabric squares in coordinating blues and whites from our vintage threads collection, this mat adds charm to your sewing room, office, or craft table.

What You’ll Need

• 20 cotton fabric squares (5.5" x 5.5")

• Low-loft cotton batting

• Backing fabric (about 22" x 28")

• Thread (matching or contrasting)

• Rotary cutter, mat, and ruler

• Sewing machine

• Iron and ironing board

• Pins or clips

Step 1: Choose and Cut Your Fabrics

Select five coordinating blue and white cotton prints. Cut twenty 5.5" x 5.5" squares. These will be arranged in a 4x5 layout (4 squares across, 5 down).

Step 2: Lay Out Your Design

Arrange the squares in a pattern you like. Try alternating light and dark tones for contrast. Once you’re happy with the layout, begin sewing each row together using a 1/4" seam.

Tip: Press the seams open or to one side to reduce bulk.

Step 3: Sew Rows Together

With all rows sewn, stitch them together to create your full patchwork top. Match seam intersections carefully for neat corners.

Step 4: Make the Quilt Sandwich

Layer in this order:

1. Backing (right side down)

2. Batting

3. Patchwork top (right side up)

Smooth out wrinkles and baste with pins or spray.

Step 5: Quilt the Layers

Using a walking foot if you have one, quilt straight lines diagonally across the squares to form an “X” in each. This helps secure all layers and adds texture.

Step 6: Trim and Bind

Trim the mat so edges are even and square (20" x 25"). Bind the edges with your preferred method—either using store-bought bias tape or making your own.

Step 7: Press and Enjoy

Give the whole mat a good press and place it on your desk to enjoy your beautiful, handmade workspace upgrade!
